Job Description

Job Summary

The Police Dispatcher is responsible for maintaining effective and efficient communication between the university law enforcement headquarters, university police officers, other outside emergency, law enforcement agencies and the public. The incumbent is responsible for establishing priorities for all calls for service, dispatching calls via radio, coordinating field personnel and radio traffic, maintaining status of all units, disposing of all incidents and handling requests for service from field units. The incumbent receives and records information quickly and accurately from complaints, requests, and signals from a variety of communications equipment such as: radio transceiver; 911 systems; Justice Department Interface Controller/California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (JDIC/CLETS); telephones; university fire and burglar alarms; and emergency signaling devices; and utilizes PC-based Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to enter research and retrieve information.

Key Responsibilities

  • Radio Communications - Provide dispatching services for the Department and is responsible for establishing priorities, using independent judgment, and following methods of operations, ensuring that all actions conform to the parameters of Department policy and federal, state, and local laws.
  • Public Communications - Act as first point of contact between the public and the Department.
  • Records Management - Enters all relevant data and activities into the Computer Aided Dispatch/Records Management (CAD/RMS) Systems.
  • Electronic Systems Control - Monitor and operate all electronic systems contained in the Communications Center.
  • Miscellaneous - Maintains uniforms and equipment necessary to the job.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The incumbent is responsible for establishing priorities, using independent judgment, and following methods of operations, ensuring that all actions conform to the parameters of Department policy and federal, state, and local laws. The incumbent may rotate among day and night tours of duty and may be required to work overtime. Ability to perform many tasks simultaneously. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as general knowledge of and experience with multiple computer systems and strong multi-tasking skills.

Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and one year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency required.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Licenses / Certificates

  • Must have completed or be able to successfully complete a P.O.S.T. Dispatcher Course. Incumbents must successfully pass supplemental P.O.S.T requirements for dispatchers such as a background check, physical and psychological examinations, drug testing, and related requirements.
  • A valid CA Driver's license required.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

The salary range for this classification is $21.23 to $38.13 per hour.

Time Base

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Hours may consist of up to 16 hours shifts.

Must be able to work various hours, including weekends, nights and Holidays.
