Job Summary:
The KH Research Nurse develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing plan of care for participants in research studies through the Research Administration/Kent Hospital in the Center for Primary Care and Prevention located at the Kent Hospital Ambulatory Center North.
- Following a detailed research protocol established by the sponsoring organizations and the Coordinating Center, the Nurse coordinates care provided by the interdisciplinary team, assures appropriate follow-up between visits and/or referral to community agencies when required.
- The Nurse provides direct clinical care, participates in improving the quality of care/quality assurance activities, provides education to participants, and monitors compliance to regimen.
- Supports MD/PI to provide nursing care to participants in research studies following detailed research protocol established by sponsoring organizations and Coordinating Centers, and by working closely with the other research staff to ensure efficient clinic operation.
- Assists in the development and maintenance of adherence strategies for continued involvement by participants in related studies.
- Assists in the preparation of study reports.
- Performs related duties as required.
Responsibilities
Performs ongoing participant assessments, nursing care/treatments per research protocol, policies, procedures, and standards
Demonstrates competence in following research procedure steps or guidelines.
Displays organization and manual dexterity.
Utilizes supplies and equipment correctly and efficiently.
Follows infection control guidelines.
Uses protective attire and equipment; disposes of wastes per guidelines.
Asses and monitors patient status accurately, thoroughly, and within allotted time frame. Initiates referrals as appropriate per protocol.
Observes, documents, reports changes in status including assessment for the occurrence of adverse events and adherence to medication schedules.
Assesses patient record and identifies health maintenance requirements during each visit.
Reviews and explains all aspects of the informed consent and HIPPA consents for research protocols and obtains consents.
Documents care provided according to protocol.
Maintains/updates knowledge and skills essential to support each research protocol/specialty clinic
Prepares required instruments and supplies required for examinations and/or procedures.
Demonstrates technical skills to perform and/or assist with specialty procedures.
Safely utilizes and properly maintains equipment, reports malfunctions appropriately.
Provides physical care which meets safety, security, and health needs for patients and families.
Ability to prioritize; evaluate; follow through on participants’ charts, lab reports, and diagnostic tests; and help triage phone calls.
Follows the policies, procedures, and parameters established by Kent for medication administration
Correctly prepares, safely administers, and appropriately documents administration.
Computes dosages and fluid rates accurately; consistently monitors delivery and patient response.
Makes decisions regarding medication administration based on usual doses, side effects, compatibility and contraindications; questions or clarifies unusual orders.
Labels expiration dates on multi-dose medication vials.
Assists as needed in regulatory documents for the sponsor and such IRB affairs such as research applications/submissions, protocol amendments, renewals and serious adverse event reporting.
