Federally recognized as a Minority Serving Institution, its employees serve more than 9,000 post-traditional learners, two-thirds of whom identify as belonging to communities of color or American Indian nations, are first in their family to attend college, and/or are eligible for Pell Grants. Since we do not operate residential facilities, Metro State University students all commute to class locations across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, or take their courses wherever they are through our many distance-learning and hybrid course offerings, allowing Metro State to truly be ?where learning meets living.? The Social Science Department: The Social Science Department faculty are trained as anthropologists, geographers, political scientists, and sociologists, and the courses we offer reflect the perspectives of each field. Our department is unique, however, in offering a strong foundation in interdisciplinary social science. The interdisciplinary emphasis brings multiple perspectives to the study of social questions. We also offer flexibility, enabling students to tailor their major to meet their individual needs and interests.

Department faculty are award-winning educators, committed to the intellectual, professional, and civic development of their students.  Dedicated teachers and mentors, the faculty bring both their academic training and professional experiences from activities outside the university into their teaching. Outside the classroom, the social science faculty are dedicated to using their training to address social problems. They frequently take the expertise and results of their research into the broader community by writing for the print and online media, making appearances on public radio.
